ABOUT CHAI
Chai (Pronounced as a single syllable and rhymes with Tie) is the word for Tea in many parts of the world. Chai, originally from India, is generally made up of rich black tea, heavy milk, a combination of various spices, and a sweetener, usually sugar or honey.
The original form of chai, as it was used by healing doctors on Royal families in India, has come a long way in its 5,000 year history. Today’s chai can be enjoyed hot or cold, powdered or concentrate, in multiple flavors and even ready-to-drink. This variety of options has driven consumers in the U.S. to seek out and try this exciting new beverage. AC Nielson reports chai sales up 82 percent in 2002 and chai sales are growing at an average of 20 percent per year.
The introduction of chai products by brand players like Lipton, Celestial Seasonings, and Mystic from Key Essentials, are proof the chai category has become a new and delicious mainstream product for the U.S. consumer.
